Well, it is officially autumn. With the weather that we are having it is a perfect start to it. Cool mornings and perfect temps during the day with a warm up coming this weekend. It’s going to be great. We could use a little rain in the lakes area but sometimes you want to be careful what you wish for. The lake is still about a foot and a half low but the water clarity is perfect. We have the Nebraska Bass Fed fishing out of the marina this week so we wish them all lots of luck and big stringers.
I have been noticing some of the leaves are starting to turn a little. The bluffs on Pomme are starting to get a little color to them, which is usually the first place I notice any change. I’m not sure if it’s the time of the year or just that it has been so dry during the month of September. It’s a little warm out there for me to be in a tree stand yet but I have been seeing a few bow hunters out there and have been seeing lots of deer moving.
LAKE LEVEL: 704.46
WATER TEMP: 73 deg.
WATER CLARITY: Clear to lightly stained.
CRAPPIE: The crappie fishing is about the same as last week. It looks to me like the crappie are trying to move a little closer to a fall pattern. When fishing on the flats look in shallower water. If you see a tree row in 6′ of water don’t be afraid to fish it. Minnows fished right off the bottom might surprise you. Drift fishing the creek channels is also starting to pick up. 15′ of water down about 12′. Even though the bridge pillars have been good all summer, the fall of the year is the best time to fish them. 25′ + water down about 15′ with minnows should be productive.
BASS: It’s getting to be spinner bait time. With the number of bait fish in the creeks it’s time to get that short arm with a # 8 blade and do a bunch of gurgling. Black has been one of my favorites for years. Work it like a buzz bait. As usual the points are still producing fish. The baby brush hog seems to be working the best. Shallow early in the day and 6′ to 8′ when the sun gets up. There are still suspended fish along the edge of the creek channels in 12′ to 15′ of water with weightless Senkos working here.
WHITES & HYBRIDS: The white bass fishing is still good and getting close to getting really good. There are good numbers of fish holding on the underwater ridges where a 1/2 oz spoon is picking up lots of limits. There is still lots of topwater action going on as well with the number of shad that are on the surface. There are starting to be more hybrids mix in with the whites. With the cooler weather coming, the wind blown pockets on main lake will take off with these fish moving up on the bank chasing shad. Get out the Rooster Tails.
CATFISH: Jugs, jugs and jugs. With shad getting a little easier to find, the jug fishing on the flats is still hot. 8′ to 15′ is good with baits set about 5′. If you can’t find shad, bluegill will work just as well. Rod and reel drift fishing is also working in the same areas. It has been brought to my attention that there are some folks out there running jugs that don’t belong to them. If they aren’t yours, leave them alone.
WALLEYE: The walleye fishing is the same as last week. Trolling the humps with deep running crankbaits and crawler rigs on bottom bouncers in the saddles next to the humps. With the water temp starting to fall a little these fish should really start feeding up.
That’s it for this week. You can contact us at Osage Bluff Marina 660-438-2939 or for rooms at Osage Bluff Motel 660-438-2891. With the great weather we are having come on down and enjoy some good fall fishing.
Till next week
