It’s the middle of February and as I fished, I couldn’t help but think about the spring crappie spawn. A very long time ago, as a small boy my brothers and I would listen intently, hearing my stepdad and his friends talk about the crappie spawn. Tossing a bobber along the bank and watching it twitch and move only to bring a crappie to the surface. Waiting for spring, warmer water and warmer weather it seemed a glorious time. That never materialized. Spring would come and go, the spawn was either to early or to late or never happened because of high water or vice versa low water. (Sigh) Why oh why doesn’t anyone talk about the fall winter crappie bite? If there was ever a time to catch crappie, BIG crappie it’s when the water is cold, the air temperature is mildly cold and crappie are hungry! Even when their bellies are full, they will still eat. I left State Park this morning around 11:30, 12:45 I had a limit of crappie. Not just crappie, BIG crappie. In the middle of “catching” I started measuring fish. I was catching a lot of fish, they were heavy but not as big as the ones already in the box. 11” crappie seemed small and back in the water they went. The fish were on the channels edge, in about 20 ft of water. I stayed with my tried and true 1/32 oz jig, red head with black body, chartreuse tail. I fished rocky points, a transition from shallow water to deep water. It didn’t matter if I let it sit over the top of the structure or slowly retrieved it. The crappie are Big, Thick and ready to bite. I can’t wait for the spawn! So that I can enjoy the warmer water and fish for something other than crappie. 🎣 |
