A Love Hate relationship. I left the park Saturday morning (mid morning) and headed up the Grand. Once again I fished along the bluffs between the park and Long Shoal. There were few fisherman to my left or right but lots and lots of boats. The first few casts was BAM BAM BAM. I thought ”this is gonna be a great day!” Wrong. After catching three 12’s in a row they shut off. I could watch them follow the jig but other than short striking occasionally they wouldn’t take it. I tried changing colors, presentation and size. They wanted nothing to do with anything I offered. It was HOT and the boat traffic was non-stop. I’d watch a boat go by, bounce up and down in the wake then smooth out. Only to have another boat go ripping by. I finally said heck with it, tied a minnow on, attached a bobber, cast towards the bank/bushes, popped the top on a cold one and sat under the canopy. Like my stepdad used to say, “it’s hot, top up”. Suddenly my bobber is bouncing and I set the hook. BAM, drag is singing, pole is bent, I have a world record crappie or a catfish. I never saw the fish, but I’d have been happy with a catfish. Or crappie. It wrapped itself around a bush and left me with a mess. Sunday we waited until mid afternoon to go fishing. Seems everyone left with the rain this morning. There wasn’t a lot going on other than they started running water. We were in the back of a cove fishing next to a tree and we noticed the tree moving away toward the channel. Then sticks, then more trees. Teresa caught a few crappie and a channel catfish. I didn’t do much other than drive the boat. The wind must have been worse around Osage Bluff. We found dock flotation heading towards the dam. When I started with Love Hate, it seems that’s how my relationship is going with crappie lately. Like every relationship it starts off fast and furious, then slows a little and eventually wants nothing to do with me. Crappie. |
