I pulled the boat last week after deciding the year was over. Little did I know that having the boat sit in our driveway would call to me. 50 degree weather and light south winds pulled me back into the water. I woke up early Sunday morning and sat in my chair watching old westerns, and out of the corner of my eye, boats heading into the park. Finally around 10am I asked Teresa if she wanted to go fishing. Stupid question, she’s always ready for a boat ride. I have to be honest, I found an excuse 3x to not go. I had to talk myself into going fishing. We launched the boat and headed out of State Park. I have to admit that as we headed out, peace of mind followed. Heading around the bend and into the Osage arm we went straight to my favorite cove across from Shawnee boat ramp. I started with a tube jig the color of a shad and after 2 drops, no fish, thought let’s change colors. BAM! BAM! BAM! A red head, black body, chartreuse tail jig was on FIRE! Less than an hour, 10 fish in the boat, lots more thrown back. Thanks Aaron Thompson for the jig color. With the Chiefs game coming (suck) we decided to head back. BUT before we did I wanted to scope the back of the cove. I saw something that I’d never seen before (pics/video) At first I thought a giant mass of cover had been dropped in the cove. It was on the bottom, stood up 5 ft and extended at least 40 ft on livescope. While watching I could see fish moving in and out/ up and down. My original thought was a massive pile of walleye. (Hope/wish) I grabbed a rod and tied on a 1/4 oz head, silver body and chartreuse tail jig. Tossed it out, watched as the jig dropped to the bottom and started ”bouncing” the jig. Quick up, slow down. BAM! Huge crappie! No way! So did it again. BAM! And drag is singing! I’m thinking “here is that elusive 4 lb crappie”. Nope, hybrid. Throw again. Hybrid. I now understand why people enjoy fishing for them. They fight like HELL! It was a GREAT day! An enjoyable day! |
