As seen on joebassteamtrail.com… 144 boatsAn end-of-April tournament on Truman Lake is supposed to be a time to celebrate getting through another winter, the annual spring green up and especially giant bass moving shallow. However, the week leading up to the kickoff derby of the 2021 Tackle HD Joe Bass Team Trail Truman Division saw a seesaw of weather conditions with snow, rain, and a rollercoaster of temperatures. 144 teams gathered at Shawnee Bend with a winter’s worth of anticipation of a heavy stringer and qualifying points for the Tackle HD Joe Bass Invitational to be held at Bucksaw Resort and Marina this fall. It seems the cream always rises to the top, and this event did not disappoint as over 1200 pounds of bass were brought to the scales and over 13 pounds was needed to finish in the money. Local stick Dennis Berhorst teamed with Jay Ritter to top the field with a solid five bass limit weighing 19.77 pounds. Dennis reported their success came working ½ ounce brown jigs tipped with Zoom Z-Craw Jr’s on shallow gravel banks. The majority of their bites came in less than 5’ of water, albeit some were off the bank aways, given the gentle slope of their areas. Another top local team, John Bennett and Darrell Reach, were just behind with a 19.05 pound bag. They also worked shallow, mixing spinnerbaits and jigs to entice their strikes. Kenny Sloan and Brendon Mick rounded out the top three with a 17.54 stringer. Kenny noted their fish came on a mix of baits, including a finesse jig, wacky rigs, and a creature bait. A 6.20 largemouth, was caught by the team of Joe Tucker and Randy Chapman. Joe said the big fish bit a green pumpkin baby brush hog flipped with a 3/16 ounce wait in 2’ of water on a flat bank. Kevin Johnston and Roger Waters took home the highest finishing Skeeter bonus as they put 14.46 pounds of bass into Kevin’s 2020 ZX250 Skeeter. They caught the majority of their fish on a spinnerbait. The second event of the Truman Division will take place May 16th with a 6:00am takeoff from Shawnee Bend. With the exceptional turnouts, take advantage of registering online prior to the event, otherwise, make sure to show up early. Bob will be at the ramp at 4:30 am.
